Each season when the vacations come back around, there seems to be a super hot toy that everybody desires, but isn’t always easy to come by.  Right now, Zhu Zhu Pets are one of these sizzling toys.  Zhu Zhu Pets are interactive, realistic looking, plush hamsters.  Why buy a Zhu Zhu pet when you could buy a real hamster?  There are some benefits to this alternative – no bad smell, no feeding, no mess, and when your child is done enjoying them you can simply store away til the next time your child wants to play with them.

Zhu Zhu Pets Hamsters and their accessories are available at resellers such as Toys ‘R Us, Amazon.com, Wal-Mart and Target.  there is a serious shortage of Zhu Zhu pets for xmas, and third party sellers are enjoying the profits by selling them at large premiums over list price on Amazon.com.

There is a better way : you can go to the beginning of the waiting line on Amazon.com when they’re in stock at regular retail price ( with no sales tax and free shipping as well ) by going straight to a free site called AZSmartShop.com and tracking them.  You may track any other hard to find items and you will be told right away when any of the things you are tracking are in stock at Amazon.com.  Then, you can buy them straight before anyone else – your ticket to the head of the line at Amazon.com.

So what are Zhu Zhu pets and what’s all of the interest about?  They’re interactive stuffed hamsters that purr and coo, but each variety also has its own distinct hue and style.

There’s :
Chunk (white), a ‘laid-back surfer with a huge heart’
Mr.  Squiggles (brown) illustrated as a ‘modern-day Houdini’
Num Nums (grey), a very trained sniffer who can sense a carrot a mile away.
Pipsqueak (yellow), small and sweet but an adventurer powerhouse.
And if all aren’t really enough, you can buy every kind of accessories from skateboard ramps and tunnels to go with them.  In that regard, adventure balls and wheels to funhouses, they are a marketer’s – and the sluggish retail sector’s – waking dream.  The query remains, are they yours – or your children’?

The Zhu Zhu Pets collection includes interactive hamsters (Chunk, Mr.  Squiggles, Num Nums, Patches and PipSqueak) and a collection of connectable play sets that may be used to make an altered habitat for these furry little buddies.  In nurturing mode, the hamsters reply to purrs and squeaks, cuddles and mild pats on the nose with coos.  In journey approach, they can explore their surroundings, reacting to stimuli with both sounds and actions.  The hamsters get power from two batteries and all of their artificial intelligence is hidden in their small bellies – for something so high tech, they are very simple to control.

Christmas is coming and many of us are already thinking about what gifts to buy this year. Buying early for Christmas is always a good idea – and that’s even truer this year.

Last year many retailers over stocked. They then had to offer heavy discounts in order to clear the shelves. Factor in the fact that the economic climate is, whilst getting better, still somewhat less than buoyant, it’s easy to see why a lot of retailers have decided to run with relatively low stock levels this year.

It might become difficult to find toys and other popular gift items the closer we get to Christmas. Toys in particular may be problematic. Whilst retailers may attempt to call off new stock in response to customer demand, the fact that most toys these days are made in Asia means that the delivery time tends to be several weeks. Restocking bare shelves may not be a feasible option.

One of the top selling toys thus far this year is Zhu Zhu Pets. These are a collection of five robotic hamsters, complete with an array of toys and accessories, which incorporate artificial intelligence. This lets them interact both with the children playing with them and their surroundings. Zhu Zhu pets were only released in August of 2009 – and kids are going crazy for them. If stock levels are sufficient, then they look like the odds on favourite for this year’s best selling Christmas toy.

They are already becoming hard to locate – and prices are increasing rapidly. You can now find third party vendors on both Amazon and eBay selling them for considerably more than the recommended retail price.

If you can’t get manage to find the latest toy, or if you don’t want to pay high prices for a fad that may well burn out in just a few months, then you could think about a more traditional toy instead. Many of these will not be the latest fad – but the fact that they have withstood the test of time says a lot.

For example, if you were buying for a young boy, a son or nephew perhaps, a train set is always a popular choice. A good Hornby Dublo train set will last for years and will still be giving children enjoyment when the latest fad has fizzled out and been replaced by something newer.

The same reasoning could be equally well applied to old favourites like Monopoly, Scrabble and Lego. These have been proven to be perennial favorites, over generations, and many have adapted to better meet the demands of modern day children.

There’s not much doubt that Zhu Zhu Pets – the family of five robotic hamsters which feature artificial intelligence which allows them to interact with children and their environment – are the must have toy for Christmas 2009.  They are in such high demand that Toys R Us have not listed them in their Christmas 2009 catalog in order to avoid disappointing prospective buyers.

The Zhu Zhu hamsters are Mr. Squiggles, Pipsqueak, Num Nums, Patches and Chunk. As well as the hamsters themselves there is a broad range of accessories and toys on offer which can be used in a variety of different ways and which encourage the kids to use their imagination to the full.

The Zhu Zhu pets are aimed at children in the age range of 4 to 10 years old and appeal to both boys and girls. They are not suitable for very small children due to the fact that they contain both moving parts and batteries.

Cepia, the manufacturers, were founded in 2004 and are based in St. Louis. Since their launch in August of 2009, six million Zhu Zhu Pets have shipped. An additional six million unit sales are forecast between now and Christmas 2009. The hamsters are currently spending an average of less than three minutes on the shelves before being snapped up. It’s fair to say that demand is high.

Prices are rising, both for the hamsters and the accompanying accessories, and you can already find them on eBay at prices higher than retail. Prices will probably increase even more as we get closer to Christmas.

Cepia are predicting sales of between $ 300 and $ 400 million over the next twelve months. This will be from not only the Zhu Zhu hamsters – they intend to expand their range to include hedgehogs, squirrels, chipmunks and rabbits. No doubt any small, cute and furry woodland animal which would appeal to children might find its way onto their list in the future.
