Turning 18 is arguably a person’s most memorable birthday. It is the age which marks the beginning of adulthood, it is the legal age in which you can vote and consume alcohol; but not in that order hopefully. This landmark should be marked with a special gift from a parent, something memorable, sentimental and not necessarily expensive. So here are a few suggestions to get your mind working.

A car is probably the perfect gift in the eyes of your child, but we’re not all made of Money. Besides, your child may not be able to drive. This is why booking driving lessons can be a great gift idea, it demonstrates to your child that you do see them as a responsible adult; it also as develops tendencies within them such as determination and willingness.

Smartphones such as the iPhone and the Samsung Galaxy S are useful gadgets and ideal for 18th birthday gifts. For one thing it encourages your child to actually ring home more often! A Smartphone is more than simply a ostentatious item, it includes useful applications such as: GPS, Internet access, a planner and a camera. It’s also a good educational tool with a number of mind games and books which can be easily downloaded on to a Smartphone.

For choosing a gift for your son, why not take him to a football match. If they’re not overly keen on sport maybe organise a weekend away to bond; a fishing trip would be perfect. As for gifts for her, why not a spa treatment? Or even a shopping spree. If your a father, then you may not favour this suggestion; many men loathe shopping, but as it’s their birthday it will be worth it to get some brownie points. Maybe just let their mother take them!

With Christmas looming, if you haven’t already bought a great present for the woman in your life, then you had better be able to come up with something special in short order! Fortunately there are a number of sites that take pity on panicked males and will have a handy section of gifts for her that ought to spare your blushes on Christmas Day. Apart from the usual novelty choccies and drinking games, a growing amount of gizmos and gadgets are now available that are designed to be used by and appeal to women. Ditch post-it sticky notes with a magnetic video memo recorder, or have that relaxing bath by the light of a remote-controlled candle-effect electrical lamp.

What better to go with that nice bath than some music? One of the popular Christmas gift ideas this year is the iPod rubber duck speaker: this waterproof wireless marvel will be able to broadcast your favourite iPod tunes and playlists whilst it sails the seas in the bathtub. The fun doesn’t have to stop there either, once out of the bath there’s a number of massage and relaxation devices from full shiatsu-style cushions that pummel the lower back, to scalp massagers that sit on the head like a strange metal spider, but give a tingly sensation that runs the whole length of your spine. The crowning point is a Music pillow that has a speaker buried in memory foam that will gently lull the user off to a peaceful sleep and further reduce those Christmas stress levels!

Why not take a break from practical gifts for the house and home by getting romantic and thoughtful with personalised gifts that really show that your partner is special. She can have a rose or even a star named after her, or you can personalise objects with engraving and printing from books to microwaveable warmers, for those moments you are not on hand to give a warm cuddle. If you are thinking of toasting Christmas, or any other occasion in style, you can even order a range of bubbly with a customised label to commemorate the event.

The perfect gift for any woman should be personal and therefore more likely to be truly appreciated. Giving something that is focussed on the person rather than the last minute box of chocolates and flowers from the petrol station or the latest in home appliances suggests that a great deal more thought has gone into its selection. You could take her shopping and give her free rein to buy whatever she likes. This will save you time on wrapping things although you do lose that moment of surprise – at least whatever she gets though will be exactly what she wants!

However you organise things, of all the gifts for women you could select, picking a break at a spa is possibly the ultimate expression of thoughtfulness and appreciation. You can also select spa products instead of an actual treatment there, these can be used at home for a bit of luxury pampering which is also appreciated. That’s what makes spa days or spa products the ideal Christmas gifts. Even if you can’t get around to arranging a full-blown treatment day at a local spa, you can at least give her the option of recharging her batteries at home after the busy Christmas period with luxury products for her hands, feet, skin and face.

Some find giving spa gifts instead of spa days also fits in better with otherwise busy lifestyles and work patterns as most spas insist on maintaining a tight schedule. Sessions that begin late must still finish on time, so rushing to make a massage appointment is not the best way to begin what should be a soothing, relaxing experience. Whatever you choose for Christmas, whether it’s a full spa day or a designer manicure set, the most precious gift at Christmas is time. Simply spending time together shows any woman that you care and is a gift you can enjoy together at Christmas or any other time of year.
