Walking through a crowded store with my arms full of packages is not my first choice of hobbies. My mother loves to shop, but I did not inherit that part of her genetic composition. The part that I detest the most, however, is trying to guess what presents everyone would actually enjoy and appreciate. I used to have this haunting fear that all of my gift shopping efforts usually resulted in a rushed trip back to the store or, worse, out to the garbage can. I could never feel confident about what to get my Grandma or Uncle Arthur. Now, I can appreciate the cute shops and the department stores, especially during the holidays, because I walk through empty handed, unhurried, with all of my shopping already long finished. I do all my shopping on the Internet, now. Well almost all of it.

While online shopping keeps me from being pushed around in a busy department store or standing in line at a little boutique, it doesn’t keep me from the most dreaded part of any gift giving event; choosing the right gift for a birthday, a holiday, a sick friend or whomever. Then about five years ago, I discovered food.

Of course, I actually discovered food when I was still an infant, but it didn’t occur to me as a great gift until I had suffered through many rounds of birthdays, baby showers, and countless other events that seem to always pop up. I received a gift basket of little sausages, spreadable cheeses and plain crackers. It was terrible! At the same time, though, I thought what a great gift this could have been. All they had to change in the gift was the quality of the contents!

Since then, I have been busy conducting research (that’s just my word for “sampling”). I have found online vendors who offer genuine quality for about the same price that you can get that synthetic stuff at the mall. (You know the one I mean, but I’m not about to open myself to a libel or slander charge by naming the brand.) Just like the mall kiosks, the online shops handle all the shipping, gift cards, everything. I know that my gifts will be exceptionally pleasant surprises for all of my gift recipients.

These Internet shops offer everything from gourmet fruit baskets to live lobster dinners (well, they won’t be alive when they are actually eaten), from wine gift baskets to cookie bouquets. The array of gift foods is really quite amazing.

For those on my gift list who live nearby, I usually assemble my own gift baskets. Even in those cases, the Internet comes to my rescue with helpful suggestions about how to make my self-assembled gift foods more interesting. The available articles also have great gift ideas for special people who often happen to be especially difficult when it comes to choosing a gift.

So help me thank the Internet for teaching me how to walk through an aisle of a store, empty handed, with a huge smile. I can do that, now, just to soak up the atmosphere of the season. I’m a tourist when I’m there instead of a frantic shopper.

For many years, the most popular gift to give to a loved one, friend or associate was a beautiful bouquet of flowers. The flowers would be admired on a desk top or counter for a few days and then the petals begin to wither. Eventually the flowers are thrown away. A gift that will give more pleasure and will serve a greater purpose is a fruit basket.

Another really great option for giving a gift is the fruit gift basket. These baskets are a unique way to show someone that you care. They are easily personalized with fruits that are favorites for the recipient of the basket as well as their family members and friends. If you are aware that the person really likes a particular type of fruit, the basket can be made of those things with ease.

To make it even more unique, you can add in strips of ribbon in their favorite
colors. You can even have it topped off with a giant bow that says happy birthday or congratulations. There are many bows that have messages. There is sure to be one for the occasion that you are looking for.

To get a fruit basket as a gift is an exciting moment. They will surely tell everyone that they know about the gift and will want to show it to anyone that is close. If the person that received the fruit basket is in a sharing mood, they may even open it up and offer it to their coworkers or family. That way everyone in the building could get a piece of the happiness.

If you are chosen to pick up a gift for someone that you do not particularly know that well, why not give them a fruit basket? A fruit basket can be a great gift, especially if you are not sure what their likes and dislikes are.

If you take a risk and purchase them a bottle of wine or clothing or something along those lines, you may find that they do not drink wine and that you have bought the wrong size. That can be really embarrassing, especially if you have purchased the gift as a gift from a large group of people.

In cases like these and for any other special occasion, a gorgeous fruit basket is the answer. The fruit basket will surely surprise the person that you are giving it to and will make the day for them. Why spend the extra Money on a flower arrangement when you can spend less and watch the person get more
from a fruit basket. Try it as a gift today. You will not be disappointed.

Please stop giving my favorite gift category a horrible reputation.  Quit sending the boxes filled with processed cheese spreads that are mostly chemicals and the unidentifiable tubes labeled as some sort of sausage.  Quit giving away those fruit baskets that are cushioned with tissue paper in an ugly box that takes up all that space in my recycle bin.  I can find apples and pears that are just as good in my local super market.

Despite my heretical words, above, I love good food gifts.  I enjoy giving them, but I enjoy receiving them even more.  However, when you send me something, please make it the same quality I give those on my gift list.  There is a difference, you know, between true quality and the convenience of buying from one of those ugly mall kiosks.  Food gifts deserve at least as much careful thought as that after-shave you bought your dad year after year in your childhood–oops, not a good example, perhaps.

Instead of that big brand name box of gelatinous cheese spreads from the mall, consider a selection of genuine artisan cheeses from some cheesemaker who actually understands what cheese is and what it can be.  Let’s keep the goats and cows happily employed instead of just putting more chemicals in our food.  I would love even a small gift such as that more than the biggest box of the fake stuff that your mall displays.

A wine gift basket will be a perfect gift for the appropriate recipient.  Just be sure that the person to whom you send it appreciates a good wine.  You see, I haven’t had a drink in years, because I’m an alcoholic.  I prefer not to be tempted, especially during the holidays, but my sister would be an ideal recipient.  She knows how to sip and savor; I remember only how to gulp and refill.

In our mobile society, we all have a beloved relative or a dear friend who has moved to some distant location.  Think about a present of a gift certificate for live lobsters or even lobster dinners.  Indeed, after you read this article, I hope you feel friendly toward me, because that is a gift that I would enjoy!

I made light of fruit gift baskets a while ago, but, if you take the time, you can find a basket of gourmet fruit–the kinds of fruit that I can’t find in my own back yard.  This is a terrific gift for someone who is a Fitness fanatic or anyone who appreciates the simple beauty that is fruit.

See?  If you give a food gift the thought that it deserves, you can avoid the line at the mall kiosk and save the heavy fruitcakes and fake cheese boxes for other shoppers.  Join me at home some evening, shopping from the Internet.  I share my real cheese with you, but you’ll have to bring the wine for yourself.
