The fruit gift basket is a gift that can be given to just about everyone and one that is perfect for absolutely any occasion. This is great for the party host, teachers, neighbors, for the holidays, birthdays, Valentine’s Day, etc. It is easy to create if you just follow the following steps.

There are just a few simple supplies you will need to put together your git of fruit. You will need some shredded paper, a wicker basket, scissors, bows, blow dryer, flowers, ribbons, heat-sealable plastic gift-wrapping and of course fruit.

The fruit needs to be very colorful and of course as perfect as possible. No big blemishes or bruises. Try to find colorful fruit and besides the usually things like apples, oranges, bananas and pears you might add things like kiwi, mangoes and pineapple.

The container does not have to be wicker but that is traditional and some colored paper that is shredded will make a nice bed for the fruit to rest in the container. The larger fruit should be on the bottom or to one side with the little pieces of fruit resting around the bottom layer.

To seal the gift basket and protect the fruit you need to use a heat-sealable plastic. Plastic gift wrapping comes in different designs and colors but you should be sure it says that it is approved for use with food products. The gift wrap should be cut three times larger than the basket.

With the wrapping paper laying out flat put the basket in the center and then raise the sides to meet at the middle and seal it at the top. Use a blow dryer to heat the plastic wrapping and seal it together making a kind of gift bag.

Now you can make your gift unique by adding flowers, ribbon, bows, or any kind of special decorative touches that will make it look as pretty as it will taste. Taste is one of the best things about giving a fruit basket and it is also good Healthy food. You can actually give the same gift to the same person over and over without it becoming a problem. It actually becomes a kind of tradition the person will look forward to because they are so tasty and refreshing.

If you do decide to give this gift often you will want to change it up some. You can add in flowers, nuts, or a special gift for the person that you can center in the basket and layer the fruit around the gift item. Or you could simply add beautiful flowers to make it even more spectacular.

Many of us are faced with a time in which some of our close friends and family are enduring tough economic times. We want to help, but we also don’t want to embarass them by extending unwanted charity. Especially in those types of cases, we want to be sure that the presents we select for them for special occasions are put to good use, needed and enjoyed. I have a few suggestions:

A fresh fruit basket is Healthy, beautiful, delicious and always enjoyed. If you live near your gift recipient, you can find a lovely basket or other attractive container and fill it with fruit that is in season in your region of the country, obtained at a farmers market, and fill it out with a few exotic fruits picked up at your local super market. If your loved one is farther away, you can arrange for any of a large range of beautiful fruit gift baskets to be delivered to the recipient’s home. It will help them to reduce their grocery bill on their next trip to the super market.

A unique meal is another way to remember a special occasion. One alternative might be to take the friend to a special restaurant. If price is no object to you, be sure to suggest some of the pricier entrees on the menu, so that your guests know that they should not worry about ordering whatever they prefer. For example, you could say something like, “The crab legs are perfect here, but, if you don’t like seafood, try the filet mignon.” If they live too far away for that, you can actually find delicious, gourmet, chef-prepared meals online that arrive frozen and can be heated in almost no time. (I actually keep my freezer stocked with these.) Or you might send a gift certificate to a special place in their town.

A final recommendation is a scrumptious dessert. Now, lets face it, nobody should indluge in too many desserts, but on a birthday, anniversary or holiday, everyone deserves a chance to feel a little pampered. Bake cookies, if that is a skill of yours, and hand deliver or have them delivered. For something a little more special consider giving them a delicious pie or a New York style cheesecake. Whether you make it yourself or have others do the work for you doesn’t matter. It will be appreciated and definitely enjoyed either way.

You may observe that all my recommendationinvolve food. Someone who is going through a difficult time may not want to accept charity, but nobody can reject a genuinely special gift. If it reduces the grocery bill by a bit, that’s just a bonus.

I have an aunt who is one of the most thoughtful, giving persons I know.  She sent a package to me that truly helped me through a very trying time in my life.  I was at Band Camp late in the summer.  Her own daughter had attended this same one a few years earlier.  Band Camp is a week of rigorous instruction in which performances for football half-time shows, as well as week-end competitions are learned.  It is an extremely strenuous activity, as choreography, Music memorization, and fine-tuning skills are perfected.

The location of Band Camp is at a rather isolated, rural setting.  Comfort is non-existent.  The cabins in which we stayed are old, dilapidated structures which house spider-ridden, musty-smelling cots.  They are arranged side-by-side and in bunks, accommodating as many campers as possible.  Talk about living in “close quarters”.  There is no other furniture in the cabin.  Even though these living and sleeping arrangements seemed undesirable and lacked privacy, we were so exhausted after our daily routines, we quickly adapted.

Meals were shared in a cafeteria setting; campers sitting shoulder-to-shoulder on hard benches.  The food consisted of bland-tasting, fattening choices.  Nothing was fresh; everything tasted like it came from a can…and it probably did.  Because we were so active, by the time meals were served, we were so hungry that we really didn’t care what we ate, as long as it was filling.

The week I attended Band Camp, the weather was uncomfortably hot and humid.  Seasonal allergies prevailed as pollen counts elevated.  Being at Band Camp was both stressful and strenuous.  Practices were brutal and the pressure of living in this kind of environment, as well as the mental and physical demands, made me miss the ordinary comforts of home.

One day, about mid-week, I was particularly frustrated.  The rigorous activity and the living conditions were getting to me.  I was hot and tired.  My muscles were sore and I was probably slightly dehydrated.  My allergies were making me even more uncomfortable, depriving me of much-needed sleep.  My muscles were sore and I was probably on the verge of dehydration.    During a short rest break, my fellow campers and I heard the roar of a UPS truck coming down the lane.  “Oh great”, I said.  “Probably some more of that fattening food being delivered”, added my friend.  Imagine my surprise (and delight) when the Band Director called out my name with his megaphone to inform me that it was I who had the delivery.

As I hurriedly tore the heavy box open, while fellow campers stood around and watched, I found a hand-written note from my sweet aunt, whose own daughter attended Band Camp a few years before.  “I know how you need to keep up your energy.  Enjoy!”

Inside the huge box was a beautiful bushel basket brimming with a variety of delicious, fresh fruit.  Sweet and juicy peaches, plums, and nectarines were abundant.  There was an assortment of McIntosh and Granny Smith apples; Bartlett and Bosc pears; red and green seedless grapes.  Juicy nectarines and peaches were also included.  Sealed packages of raisins, dried cherries, and banana chips were thrown in, as well.  Best of all, was a gigantic, ripe watermelon.

My aunt’s note said to share; so share, I did.  There was enough fruit for everyone to enjoy.  This basket of fresh fruit was the Healthiest we had eaten all week.  We savored each nutritious bite.  It gave us the energy we needed to make it through the week.  It refreshed us enough to calm our nerves.  It gave us the nutrition we were lacking so we could focus and concentrate on what we needed to learn.

Due to my aunt’s thoughtfulness, my band-mates and I can look back at our Band Camp experience with fondness.  It was one of the more memorable highlights of the week.  Sending me the Fruit Basket turned out to be the encouragement (and nourishment) I needed to see me through to the end.  It arrived at one of the more difficult times in my life and turned it into a positive experience.  It was such a great idea; I will never forget how much I appreciated it.  In fact, I plan to send a deliciously fresh Fruit Basket to other band campers in years to come.  I’m sure they will appreciate it as much as I did.
