A laptop battery pack includes a battery of cells, a casing or housing to protect and contain the cells, interconnect means for interconnecting the cells within the casing and conductors running from the interconnected cells to external terminations. The pack also includes a thermally sensitive circuit breaker which serves to disconnect the cells in the event of excessive cell temperatures. The battery pack may include a measuring-resistor strap having two projecting measuring contacts, which forms a portion of the conductors that couples the battery terminals and pack terminals.
A separate current-measuring circuit mounted in the housing provided in the battery pack is coupled to the projecting measuring contacts. A control module in the battery pack receives signals representative of cell voltage, temperature derived from a temperature sensor arranged in thermal contact with the cell and cell current derived by measuring the voltage across a sensing resistor with respect to the external negative voltage. A thermally sensitive circuit breaker provided in the battery pack is in thermal contact with the battery cells and is arranged to disconnect the cell current in case of excessive cell temperature. Usually the laptop battery consists of chemical cells and digital circuit. The success rate of the laptop battery depends on the battery type. Laptop batteries can be repaired but the work is often time consuming.
A characteristic laptop battery connection consists of positive and negative battery terminals, thermistor, clock and data. The positive and negative battery terminals are located at the outer edges of the connector. The positive and negative battery terminals have elasticity of demand to connect the battery outer shell. A thermistor wire is provided at the outside to allow for temperature protection. The most common thermistors are 10 Kilo Ohm NTC or 10kOhm at 20°C or 68°F. It is always better to use the thermistor during charge and discharge to protect the battery against overheating. The inner contacts accommodate the clock and data. Clock and data are usually combined on a one-wire system. The permanent data contained in the battery is programmed into the battery at time of manufacture. The permanent data includes battery type, battery ID number, serial number, battery manufacturer and date of manufacture. The temporary data contained in the battery is acquired during use and consists of cycle count, user pattern and maintenance requirements.
The fix terminal included in some laptop battery is made of flexible material and is adjustable for angle of demand. The fix terminal is selected from the group consisting of 30 degree, 45 degree, 60 degree, 90 degree and 180 degree. Some laptop batteries may have a solid-state switch that is normally in the OFF position. The battery will turn ON when the switch terminal is connected to the ground. Some laptop battery even includes an end-of-battery-life switch which is used to stop the functioning of the battery at a preset capacity level.
The Laptop battery is mostly made of two-wire system architecture. The two-wire system is usually configured to the System Management Bus (SMBus). The SMBus is based on a two-wire system using a standardized communications protocol. The SMBus battery has five or more battery connections. The connections of SMBus battery are commonly safe but testing this type of battery appears complicated. In future, intelligent rechargeable battery packs may include some control or monitoring means to provide charge current control during recharge, charge monitoring during discharge and charge, display of battery condition, and transmission of battery condition or other parameters to external equipment.

Despite its name, it is usually quite uncomfortable to use the laptop from your lap. Laptops produce an extraordinary amount of heat, slowly roasting your lap into a pair of fried drumsticks. To solve this problem many companies have come up with Laptop desks that are designed to comfortably support your laptop while you sit on a chair, sofa, or bed.

Most of the laptop desks in the market right now are electrically powered. They are usually fitted with some small fans to cool the laptop and come in boring shades of black and white.

Among the many models available in the market, my favorite laptop desk would have to be Logitech’s Comfort Lapdesk. The lap desk is a high tech piece of cushion that shields your legs from the laptop’s heat. It has a cool, space-age design, which is good enough of a reason on itself for anyone to get one of these.

The Comfort Lapdesk does is not electrically powered and does not rely on any fans to cool the laptop. The lower layer of the pad is curved upwards, creating an air chamber that allows air to flow through. This process cools down the laptop. The curvature of the pad also creates minimum contact with your lap. This laptop desk is at contact with your lap at only four points, minimizing the transfer of heat from the laptop to your lap.

According to Logitech’s research, nearly 60% of all laptop users use their laptop while they are on a couch. Because of this, the design of the laptop desk is of such that it naturally tilts 12 degrees upwards. Here, you can comfortably use your laptop without having to bend your knee all the time.

If you are into something sturdy and rugged, our next laptop desk may be just the right choice for you. The Laptop Desk 2.0 is a heavy-duty pad that can support the largest laptops available. It measures at 20″ long and can be folded into half for to accommodate smaller laptops. It also bends upward with a quick flip to become a laptop stand.

A disadvantage of this laptop desk is that it weights a hefty 1.4 pounds, adding much load to your laptop bag. To make up for this, it is reasonably priced and much cheaper than many other laptop insulators out there. It also looks kind of cool with its black and rubbery texture. Its sturdy construction and hardy material makes this laptop desk very durable, perfect for all butterfingers out there.

The surface of this LapWorks model has deep groves in them, allowing air to flow beneath the laptop. This effectively cools the laptop by over 2 degrees when used for prolonged periods of time. Unfortunately, its design only provides a moderate amount of protection against the laptop heat. After approximately 20 minutes of usage, the user can start feeling the heat seeping through the padding. For maximum cooling, the user would need to tilt the desk to create an air passage below to cool the laptop further.

It Just Keeps Getting Better

Unlike before, the physical size of a laptop is not the only issue under consideration by the consumer. Today, manufacturers are constantly producing new models, the specifications becoming higher and higher. For some time, it has not been unusual for a new laptop to be outperformed by another, newly released model, within months of purchase. Many people see upgrading their laptop memory as a good way to improve Computer performance, keeping their machine updated and stop it becoming obsolete.

Random Access Memory

Is their a difference between a laptop memory and a desktop computer memory? Like most of the components within a laptop, it’s simply a physicality. Most people are familiar with the term ‘Random Access Memory’, or RAM for short. A term which refers to the size of memory. A unit used by all the manufacturers to grade one component with another. Irrelevant of whether it is for a laptop or desktop. The RAM module for a laptop is much smaller, physically. Therefore, they tend to be more expensive than those manufactured for a desktop. All the same performance, squeezed into a much smaller unit.

Functionality

The size of the Laptop memory is not the only difference, they are also designed to consume less power. Another important feature for laptop users. A RAM module carries out the same job, regardless of computer model. So, what exactly is the function of ‘Random Access Memory’? What does it do? In the simplest of terms! The RAM module is used to temporarily store important data needed by the processor, in order to complete a command. By boosting the RAM memory on a computer, the amount of data which can be stored will be considerably greater. Therefore, the performance of the computer substantially improved.

Do You Need More?

When your computer starts to slow down, it’s usually trying to tell you something! No matter how large the processor, if your machine doesn’t have enough RAM, it will be sluggish. Certainly not performing at it‘s best. With some programs, it may even struggle to complete the task at all. Sometimes, if you begin to use a more updated version of a particular software, the problem will arise. This is when many people will look for a way to improve their machines performance. Adding more memory is an easy solution to the problem. Compared to replacing the computer, usually the most cost effective one too.

What’s Too Much?

Most manufacturers, retailers and computer users agree, there can never be too much! Especially with regards to a laptop. Basic laptops usually have 256mb of RAM, giving an average performance for average tasks. Many of the new computers are supplied with new, bigger operating systems. Windows Vista for example. Without enough RAM, even a new computer might be slow, due to the size of it’s platform. Before buying a new laptop memory, check out the computer manual. Most laptops have a limit as to how much RAM that particular model can handle. Could save disappointment. For most people, the improvement in their laptops performance makes the initial expense well worth it.
